Tend The Flame!
If Astound Yourself Today is "The Foundation for the PLU Nation" because it details the basis of our philosophy, Tend The Flame is the studs upon which we build the walls of our new world.
18th century minister, John Wesley, was once asked how he attracted such large audiences to hear his town square sermons. He responded, "God lights me on fire & people come to watch me burn."
A good question for us today: "Is anyone coming to watch you burn?"
In my popular talk, Tend The Flame™, I tell the story of my father's wisdom on the day I married my high school sweetheart. Referring to Leviticus 6:12, my dad the minister began the ceremony:
"The fire on the altar must be kept burning; it must not go out. Every morning the priest is to add firewood and arrange the burnt offering on the fire... The fire must be kept burning on the altar continuously, it must not go out."
Looking up from his Bible, he challenged us to "Tend the flame. Wake up each day seeking new ways to say 'I love you.'"
Why do you need to tend the flame?
I've learned over the years that such advice is not only good for marriage, it's true in EVERY AREA OF OUR LIVES.
Everything in our lives today is "set it & forget it." We set up our payments to be automatically drafted from our checking account each month. We have irrigation systems to automatically water our grass , and we have gas logs in our fireplace.
Thus, our bills get paid, our grass looks great & we have a warm, romantic setting in the house even though we are essentially neglecting the bills, the grass & the fire. Seems like a pretty good plan. All the benefits with none of the work!
But have you ever built a fire without a gas line or gas logs in the fireplace? If you want to keep that flame burning, you must constantly tend it. There is no "magic key" to set & forget. The same is true of your passion for your dreams. If you don't constantly tend that flame, it soon flickers & dies. It's sad, but true, there are no gas logs in your heart.
And therein lies the dilemma: When everything else in our world is "set it & forget it," how do you cultivate a mindset of "tending" anything? And if you do, where do you start? What tools are available?
Who - or what - will be our provocation, our spark?
